The Mungret 1st year girls basketball team took on Calasanctius College on the 26th February. The match showcased determination, teamwork and great school spirit. The starting five included; Katie, Shona, Abeiah, Sophie and Oishi.

From the jump-ball, Katie won Mungret the ball and it was clear that the Mungret girls were set on giving the game their all. The first two baskets were won by Calasanctius. Katie got Mungret their first basket. Strong rebounding and tight marking was key to limiting Calasanctius’ scoring opportunities.

The second quarter saw Chloe, Melissa, Oishiani, Isabella and Sophia take to the court. The second quarter began with only a handful of points separating the teams. Chloe got another basket! Melissa won Mungret another two points with an exceptional basket.

The third quarter proved pivotal. TY assistant coaches, Emer Purtil and Kay You explained some plays for the girls to try. Laura Gocek from 5th year also provided some sound advice for the girls. Chloe, Katie, Melissa, Greesha and Abeiah took to the court. Greater communication on defence and improved movement off the ball allowed one team to go on a short scoring run. Chloe and Katie gave two baskets to Mungret early on in the quarter. Shona came on and scored another brilliant basket.

The final quarter was played at a relentless pace. Calasanctius came back strong. With Mungret losing a couple of rebounds, Calasanctius took home the win. The Mungret girls played a super game and are determined to come back stronger next year. When the final whistle sounded, it marked the end of a highly competitive match- final score of 21-26.

Well done to the full match team: Abeiah Abdallah, Beverly Chiderra Aniebo, Chloe Cowhey, Greesha Pasam, Isabella O’Mahony, Katie O’Grady, Melissa Reeves, Oishiani Sengupta, Oishi Sengupta, Shona Hallinan, Sophia King and Sophie Ryan.

2nd year match

The 2nd-year girls’ basketball match was an exciting display of teamwork. The game started strong with early baskets from Yulia and Eabha, with Grace providing excellent assists. Caoilinn showed impressive rebounding and marking, while Aimee maintained tight defensive pressure throughout. Yulia grabbed another rebound to score, and Grace continued to make sharp passes up the court. Eabha and Aimee demonstrated great attacking play with well-timed assists.

In the second quarter, Sarah, Holly, Victoria, Sofia, and Ella contributed significantly. Victoria made a remarkable shot and showcased strong defense, blocking opponent attempts, while Sofia’s quick runs and precise pass to Ella created scoring opportunities. Ola and Aoibhinn were exceptional in distributing the ball and supporting the team’s flow. The third quarter saw Aimee attempting to drive the ball, with Lily making key defensive blocks. Yulia consistently defended and drove shots, Lily remained persistent with her defense, and Gabbi provided strong passes and blocks. Ola continued to excel with her ball handling, making precise passes that kept the team in control.

The third and final quarter saw some brilliant teamwork between Victoria, Grace and Lily. Some brilliant defensive work. Unfortunately, the girls couldn’t take home the win but never gave up and displayed great support and school spirit. Overall, the match highlighted strong teamwork, determination, and skill from every player on the court.

Girls U19 Crowned World Champions!

Our Girls Under-19 team have made history — winning the World Championships!

Over two incredible days of competition, the team played five intense matches, showing outstanding skill, teamwork, and determination. In a nail-biting final against Jamue El Just of Spain, the girls held their nerve to secure victory by just one point. It truly came right down to the wire, but their resilience and strength shone through when it mattered most.

A huge thank you goes out to all the parents and supporters who travelled to cheer the team on, and to our dedicated coaches Ms. Donovan and Ms. Pearse for their guidance, leadership, and encouragement throughout the tournament.

We are so proud of this incredible achievement and can’t wait to welcome home our World Champions!

By Niamh Sweeney

On the 6th of November 2025 our under 19 girls arrived in Valencia for the World School Championships held in L’Alqueria del basket. Our girls were the first girls team to represent Ireland in this competition making it a massive opportunity for both them and the school. The team faced 5 tough matches from countries such as Spain, England and Ethiopia but successfully won all of them in a very strong start. The girls topped the under 19 group and reached the final after two hard days. Here they faced IES Jaume II El Just, a spanish team that was second in the pool and a very strong contender in the competition. After an exciting final that was extremely close the whole game, the girls ended up winning the whole championship by a single point. This win came from the whole team's collective hard work, endless support, and the help of teachers Ms. Donovan and Ms. Pearse who've been coaching since the start of the girl’s time in Mungret. This trip was an unforgettable experience, with the team making the most of this amazing opportunity and winning out the competition.

Training Overview:

Both the U16 and U19 squads continue to train every Monday at 8 a.m. in the PE Hall, focusing on tactical development, offensive plays, and defensive transitions ahead of their league and cup matches.

Girls U16s Basketball

The U16s tipped off their league season on Tuesday, 16th September, against Calasanctius. Despite a determined effort, the side fell short of the result they were aiming for. Kay You stood out as a consistent player, demonstrating strong leadership and court vision throughout the game.

The team regrouped quickly for their Cup fixture against Rathmore on Tuesday, 23rd September, where they secured a narrow yet hard-fought 43–38 victory. The game was defined by high defensive intensity and balanced scoring, with every player contributing to maintain momentum in the closing minutes.

Their first home league match took place on Thursday, 9th October, against Salerno, ending in a convincing 32–17 win. The team displayed excellent defensive discipline, limiting Salerno’s scoring opportunities while converting efficiently on fast breaks. Yulia Badmaeva dominated with strong rebounding and inside scoring, while Gyte Andrijauskaite impressed with her composure and accuracy of 3 pointers.

Girls U19s Basketball

This season’s U19 panel includes several U16 players stepping up to senior competition, notably Isabella Phayer, Niamh Sweeney and Gyte Andrijauskaite, who have already adapted well to the pace and physicality.

The U19s opened their season in style with a Cup win over Portlaoise on Thursday, 25th September, claiming a commanding 65–38 victory. The team’s cohesive ball movement and defensive pressure were key factors, allowing them to control the tempo from the outset. Scoring was well distributed across the roster, underlining the group’s depth and versatility.

Their first home league fixture, scheduled against Salerno on Thursday, 9th October, did not take place as Salerno were unable to field a full squad, resulting in a bye for our team. The U19s remain unbeaten and will look to carry this momentum into the remainder of the season.

World Championships

A group of twelve students will proudly represent Mungret CC at the World School Basketball Championships in Valencia, Spain, from 6th–10th November, accompanied by teachers Aoife Donovan and Sinead Pearse, as well as the players’ parents.

Over five days, the team will engage in training sessions, participate in pre-event media activities and compete in group-stage matches against international opposition. They’ll also attend WSG All-Star matches, offering valuable insight into elite-level play.

Representing the school and the country on the world stage marks a remarkable achievement for these players.

This year our first and second year girls teams had a great season playing at A league level. The team started training in October and the season took off in January and ended in February. Ms. Costello and Ms. Horan were great supportive coaches throughout the season. We also had TY's come along and help with training and matches. We had many matches in Galway and Limerick, a few wins and a few losses but everyone played well and made our school proud. We are already looking forward to playing again next year!

2022/2023

We had teams entered in minor, junior and U19 competitions this year. All teams played some great basketball making the South-West semi finals and left everything on the court with all three teams narrowly losing out to the eventual regional winners.
