A huge well done to Abna Soni, Abriya Joseph, and Sarah O’Sullivan, who proudly represented our school in this year’s 'Make a Switch' Climate Action Schools Competition, run by LCETB. Their project, 'Plant Pulse', was a brilliant blend of technology and environmental care—designed to help people look after their plants in a more sustainable way.
The system used a moisture sensor, a water pump, and a relay board connected to a micro:bit. When the sensor detected that the soil was too dry, it automatically triggered the pump to water the plants using recycled rainwater collected from a small reservoir. This not only reduced water waste but also encouraged responsible water reuse. The girls added several extra features to make the system even smarter. A thermometer was included to monitor the temperature inside the greenhouse and signaled an alarm in a nearby classroom to indicate that the greenhouse door needed to be opened to allow air to circulate. The entire system was powered by rechargeable batteries, making Plant Pulse even more eco-friendly.
While they didn’t walk away with a prize this time, the girls can be incredibly proud of what they achieved. They worked with real determination, creativity, and teamwork—and their enthusiasm was clear for all to see. It was a great learning experience and a wonderful example of how young people can lead the way in climate action.
We’d also like to say a big thank you to the Climate Action Team from LCETB for organising such an inspiring competition. It gave students across the region a real platform to share their ideas and take meaningful action on climate change.
