County Champions
History was made this week in Mungret Community College as MCC claimed their first senior football title. The team worked very hard throughout the year and their journey wasn't so simple, it started off in the Munster campaign where MCC got an extremely close win after the game went to extra time with a last minute goal to win. After this extraordinary win the momentum was high going into the second round, but maybe it was too high as MCC were all over the place and ended up losing a very close game, but as the old saying goes “a minor set back for a major comeback.” The boys in the red and black jerseys didn't let this loss get to them though as they bounced back to training with their eyes set on a new goal: the Limerick championship. After a few weeks of training the boys set out to play the semi final of the Limerick championship, they faced Desmond College from Newcastle west.
Due to MCC’s hard work being put in over the previous weeks the semi final was a breeze and they game Desmond a hammering, giving themselves high hopes as they faced the final. Again with high hopes going into the final vs Askeaton were players getting flashbacks to the second round of Munster? Well it sure seemed like it as the first half of the final was very poor from MCC balls were going astray a number of wides nothing was going to plan the team were lucky to be so close at half time. In the second half MCC came out a different team there seemed to be a bit of hunger about them but Askeaton put the pressure on scoring a late goal to bring it to a 1 point game. This is it down to the wire, Askeaton were through on goal they shoot….. But a miraculous save from goalkeeper Paul Carmody! He is the hero on the day as the referee proceeds to blow his full time whistle and present the cup to captain George Lloyd, what a significant day for the school congrats to all involved!
